As the lyrics of Pink Floyd’s famous song “Money” go, Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.
So, if you were minding your own business in a parking lot, and suddenly there were thousands of dollars flying by you on a gust of wind, what would you do? Would you grab that cash, stuff it in your pockets, and dart to wealthier freedom? Or would you grab that cash and then turn to see who it belonged to? Luckily for a seventy-year-old California man, the people in the parking lot decided to play the Good Samaritan.
Estelle Getty was only sixty years old when she won the role of octogenarian Sophia on The Golden Girls in 1985, but with her incredible comedic talent she had everyone believing she was as old and sassy as her character. It was with a heavy feeling of sorrow that I learned she died at the age of eighty-four, after a long struggle with dementia.
The Dark Knight, the newest installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise, set records over the weekend, beating Spider Man 3 in box office take. It managed this feat thanks largely to tremendous hype, enthusiastic fanboys (and girls) lining up at late night showings, and good critical notices, particularly for the late Heath Ledger in the career-defining role of the Joker. Most people couldn’t even get tickets. So is it worth the hype?
We’re in the lazy days of summer, and while that conjures up pictures of ice-cold Popsicles, tanning in the sun, and perfunctory family road trips, the reality may not be quite so idyllic. With gas prices hovering precariously at nearly $5.00 a gallon, you might want to save those dusty roads for another year. My solution: forget the trip, pull on the headphones, and chill (preferably with watermelon Popsicles) to these summery tunes as they take you to some far and (not so) distant lands.
I’d never been to an MLB All-Star event before, so it was something of a shock when a friend of mine said he could get us tickets. All of a sudden, I was getting off the 4 train in the Bronx, in the shadow of the new Yankee Stadium, ready to see some of the best power hitters in the league. Unfortunately, I only got to see them during batting practice. Very few of the big-name power hitters (A-Rod, Manny, etc…) chose to participate in the Derby, and the lack of energy in the crowd reflected that. That is, of course, until the contest was reawakened (and saved) by Josh Hamilton.
